Attributes #11 – Wisdom, Psalm 104

Wisdom not same as knowledge, how will our God act towards us and his world in his infinite knowledge, power, and authority? We learn that he will act wisely. So what is it?

1 – God’s wisdom defined. Grudem “means that God always chooses best goals, and the best means to them, goes beyond God knowing all things, and specifies that his decisions about what he’ll do are always wise, i.e., they always bring about the best results … through the best possible means”. “To God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding are his”.

So, the wisest choice is the one that brings the most glory to God. How is this wisdom displayed? 1st in creation, “How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures”. Reflect on how wise God’s creation is – how balanced it all is, sun, moon, stars, sizes and distances, proportions and intensity, telescopic and microscopic, beauty and intricacy, ecosystems and weather systems, landscapes and sunsets, the anthropic principle, all put together by his wisdom … but it’s ultimate end isn’t that we admire it (good though that is), but rather him, “The heavens declare the glory of God”, and not only how things were created, but what happens (= providence), down to the tiniest detail, and all the consequences of all possibilities, ‘for want of a nail … a kingdom was lost’.

And so we can trust in his wisdom when the path is hard, remember Paul’s life and how he was used for God’s glory in hard circumstances, and his wisdom in salvation, sending his only son into the world as a human, born under the law which he perfectly kept, falsely accused, flogged, mocked, stripped, crucified and killed “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God”, “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and[fn] knowledge of God!”

Prayer themes: worship, praise, and thanks for his wisdom, letting all aspects of the creation point us to him, reflect on his providence, and how everything is designed to promote his glory, including our faith-trying difficult circumstances, and reflect on his plan of salvation and our place in it – pray for those still outside it.
